What Are The Penalties For A DUI In New Jersey?

Typically, First Time Offenders For New Jersey DUI Charges Face The Following Penalties:
- Loss Of Driver’s License Between 3 Months And 12 Months If Alcohol Is Involved
- Loss Of Driver’s License Between 7 And 12 Months If Drug Intoxication Is Involved
- The Requirement That A Ignition Interlock Device Be Installed On Your Vehicle For Anywhere From 3 Months To 15 Months
- A Fine Between $250 And $500
- A Yearly Surcharge On Your Automobile Insurance Of $1,000 For Three Consecutive Years
Second Time Offenders Under The New Jersey DUI Law Face Much Stiffer Penalties:
- Loss Of Driver’s License Between 1 And 2 Years

- 30 Days Of Community Service

- A Mandatory 48-Hour Jail Sentence That Can Be Extended Up To 90 Days Of Jail.
If This Is Your Third Or More DUI Offense, The Penalties Include:
- Loss Of Driver’s License For Eight Years
- Installation Of An Ignition Interlock Device
- A Fine Of At Least $1,000
- A Yearly Surcharge On Your Automobile Insurance Of $4,500 For Three Consecutive Years
- A Mandatory 180 Days In Jail. This Amount Can Be Reduced If The Offender Participates In An Inpatient Drug Or Alcohol Rehabilitation Program.
